What you need to know about Canada's election
As we conclude the first week of campaigning, the Liberals have expanded their lead over the Conservatives. According to 338Canada, the Liberals are projected to get 42% of the vote, Conservatives in second place with 37%, and the NDP a distant third at 9%. This has been due to more gains in Atlantic Canada as well as Liberals gaining in the metro areas in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
On Friday, Liberal Leader (and de facto Prime Minister) Mark Carney had a conversation with US President Trump. The two discussed the current economic tensions but in a change of tone, seeming had positive things to say about one and other. Trump referred to Carney as “Prime Minister” and said they “had a very good conversation” while Carney said Trump “respected Canada’s sovereignty.”
While most of the federal leaders have stayed out east so far in the campaign, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre came to BC last week where he held a rally in Surrey, to a crowd of thousands. B.C. is a swing province and crucial to forming any Conservative government. However, in the last few months, the Conservatives have significantly lost ground but with this rally, Poilievre hopes to make it up.

Singh unveils housing plan
NDP Jagmeet Singh introduced a plan on Sunday for publicly-backed, fixed-term, low interest loans for first time homebuyers. Singh says his plan will save new homeowners as much as $9,500 over the course of five years. With the election quickly becoming a two party affair, Singh and the NDP must find a way to become politically relevant for the rest of the campaign and Singh hopes his new housing policy will excite NDP voters who switched to the Liberals to flock back to his banner.
While the Liberals are ahead in the polls right now, there is still a lot that can happen before election day a month from now and if politics has taught us anything, expect the unexpected.
