BC Ferries has faced widespread criticism as winter travel continues to be disrupted by canceled sailings, leaving passengers frustrated during the peak holiday season. Persistent issues, including staff shortages, aging vessels, and worsening weather, have contributed to the chaos. Here’s a closer look at the situation.
Staffing shortages
One of the primary causes of disruptions has been staffing shortages.
Despite a recent hiring campaign and wage increases, BC Ferries has struggled to retain employees.
With an estimated 500 vacancies in critical positions such as deckhands and engine room attendants, the organization is unable to meet its operational demands.
Aging vessels and maintenance delays
BC Ferries operates one of the largest fleets in North America, but many of its vessels are nearing the end of their service life.
Maintenance schedules have been delayed due to limited shipyard availability and supply chain challenges. The Coastal Celebration and Queen of Oak Bay, two key vessels, have faced mechanical issues that resulted in canceled sailings.
Impact of severe weather
Increasingly severe winter storms, driven by climate change, are also disrupting schedules.
High winds and rough seas have made it unsafe to operate ferries on key routes like Tsawwassen–Swartz Bay and Horseshoe Bay–Departure Bay. Over 20 sailings were canceled in the first two weeks of December due to adverse weather conditions.
Public response
Passengers have voiced frustrations on social media, with many demanding more transparency and accountability from BC Ferries.
The company’s customer service lines have been overwhelmed, further compounding public dissatisfaction. Advocacy groups are calling for increased government oversight and funding to address operational inefficiencies.
The road ahead
To address these challenges, BC Ferries has announced plans to invest $3.9 billion over the next 12 years to modernize its fleet, hire additional staff, and improve service reliability.
However, critics argue that immediate measures are needed to mitigate disruptions during peak travel periods.
