Still not sure about grabbing tickets? Maybe this breakdown review will help you decide!
The Performers
One of the standout features of the show was the incredible talent displayed by the lead actors. Of course, since the production is put on by students, there were moments when you would giggle at the fact that the mom Donna and daughter Sophie were the same age, and the potential three dads were clearly all in their teens. But regardless of that, it was easy to ignore with the high levels of energy, dedication and passion that the students brought to their roles. Each performer fully embraced their character, and really dove into both the humour and emotional depth that Mamma Mia! is known for. Whether they were belting out iconic songs like “Dancing Queen” or delivering witty dialogue, the leads and the ensemble exceeded every expectation.
The Set Design
The set design was stunning. It was a beautiful atmosphere that transported the audience straight to a lovely flower filled Greek Taverna. Overall it was both simple and effective. It allowed the action to shine while still evoking the vibrant setting. The set pieces, particularly the staircase and the walk-way that was near the front of the stage, were used effectively in several scenes. The walk-way also got the actors closer to the audience, creating a more intimate setting.
The Music
The live orchestra, another key component of any musical, was flawless. They delivered every ABBA tune with precision and enthusiasm. It was easily one of the most impressive parts of the show. Whether it was the catchy rhythms of “Super Trouper” or the emotional pull of “The Winner Takes It All,” the orchestra’s performance was a huge element in making it such an enjoyable show to watch.
The Costumes
The costumes were spectacular! From the simple grecian blue and white summer outfits to the bedazzled pants suits in disco scenes, it was easy to see how much thought and detail went into every look for every single cast member. The costumes were a perfect blend of tacky 70s and modern sleekness, and was a wonderful tool to help bring all the different personalities to life.
The Audience
Something worth noting is the vast variety of people that the show attracted to opening night. There were kids 5 and under and senior citizens in that room, all with massive smiles on their faces. It is no doubt a wonderful outing that feels safe and welcoming for all ages. Whether you are a die-hard Mamma Mia! fan who knows every word to the songs by heart or someone who has never seen the movie before, the show had something for everyone.
Downsides
While this review is mainly glowing, there was one minor drawback that should be mentioned regarding the seating arrangement in the theatre. If you are seated on the left-hand side, you will be met with an obstructed view during certain scenes. The previously mentioned staircase was positioned toward the back left side of the stage rather than in the centre, so when the actors moved up the stairs to the balcony, they were out of sight to anyone seated on the left. So, with that said, if you are planning to attend the show, it is recommended to secure a seat in the middle, right-hand side, or balcony area of the theatre for a non-obstructed view. Despite this, the overall experience was fantastic, and it was easy to stay immersed in the story and music.
Final thoughts
In conclusion, the students brought a beautiful show to Massey Theatre that was nothing short of impressive. With incredible lead performances, outstanding set design, a perfect orchestra, and fun, creative costumes, the show was a blatant reminder of how wonderful this story is, and made for an unforgettable night in New Westminster. If you are looking for a fun thing to do this week, you should absolutely give this a go! Tickets are on sale now for as low as $24 and the shows will be happening every night until Sunday. You can count on the fact that this production will have you singing, dancing, and smiling long after the curtain falls.
