DespitSimon Fraser University (SFU) has officially confirmed that its football program, a staple since 1965, will not return. The decision, announced on Wednesday, marks the final chapter for the team, which was discontinued in 2023 after the NCAA’s Lone Star Conference opted not to renew its affiliation with the school. Despite a brief period of uncertainty, SFU's athletic department has made it clear that football is no longer a viable option.
The closure comes after years of challenges, including dwindling football programs on the West Coast and SFU's transition to NCAA Division II in 2012. A report commissioned by the university in September 2023 confirmed that SFU had no place in NCAA football and warned that returning to Canada’s U Sports would be costly and uncertain. Financial challenges, while not the sole reason for the program's end, were also a key factor. SFU’s athletic budget, like many universities, faces significant pressures, with potential cuts across departments.
While football is out, SFU has not ruled out future sports additions, such as a men’s hockey team. The university has been considering its options, with coach Mark Coletta suggesting that a self-funded program could make SFU a competitive force within NCAA Division I in five years. However, this remains uncertain, as SFU's Provost, Dilson Rassier, emphasized that any new sport must be financially sustainable.
This decision has drawn disappointment from alumni and former players, who have voiced concerns about a lack of communication from the university. Despite the closure, SFU remains proud of its football history, which produced CFL stars like Lui Passaglia and Doug Brown. Are you surprised to see the program go?
