One of Vancouver's most iconic events returns for its 41st year.
With warmer weather finally appearing on our forecast, training for the iconic Sun Run under the sun has improved.
On April 27, Vancouver will host its 41st Sun Run marathon. Founded in 1985, the Sun Run has brought thousands of participants to our city to attempt Canada's largest 10-kilometer road race. The run begins at Burrard and Georgia, passes through the West End and English Bay waterfront, across the Burrard Bridge and False Creek, Mount Pleasant and finishes outside of B.C. Place.
The Sun Run was founded by Doug and Diane Clement, former Olympian sprinters, and Jack Taunton, a sports exercise medicine doctor motivated to promote the health benefits of running. The marathon's first run in 1985 brought 3,200 individuals to attempt the race.
The race has various divisions for people of any level. There is the famed 10K run, a 10K walk, a mini race, a team event for adults and youth, and a virtual option.
There has been hardship regarding the event, including the postponement of the Sun Run due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, when it returned in 2022, Vancouver was packed with thousands of eager runners ready to take on the challenge. Now, participants have the option to take the challenge virtually, which can include anyone from all over North America. Those looking to participate virtually will also receive a t-shirt and race bib to celebrate their efforts.
The Sun Run also offers various volunteer opportunities. Volunteers assist with every aspect of the event, including handing out water and giving directions. Anyone can participate in the event, even if not running or walking.
In 2025, thousands of participants will attend this year's run to participate in an event that celebrates the community of Vancouver, the spirit of running, and encouragement. Good luck, and stay hydrated to all the runners, walkers, and volunteers!
